Training and Workshops

Besides the workshops shown below, we are planning a workshop on self-harm. Please
contact us for more details. Customized shorter training sessions are also available. Register
for these workshops through the Suicide Prevention Resource Centre in Grande Prairie.
ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) Workshop
ASIST is a LivingWorks program designed to help all caregivers become more ready, willing and able to help
persons at risk. Suicide can be prevented through the actions of prepared caregivers.
ASIST is a 2-day intensive, interactive and practice-dominated course designed to help caregivers
recognize risk and learn how to intervene to reduce the immediate risk of suicide. Participants receive a Suicide Intervention Handbook on CD and a full color, laminated pocket card
featuring intervention, risk review and safe plan development principles.
Certification is for 3 years. Within those 3 years, it is possible to take a half-day Tune Up.
This will certify you for 2 years and after that time a full 2-day ASIST workshop is required.

Locations are all to be announced, as we are looking for a new facility.The current rate of $135 will be
increased in the near future.

Tune Up - Suicide Intervention Workshop
This flexible half-day follow-up to the 2-day ASIST offers you a chance to review the intervention process.
It also will help increase your comfort level when dealing with people at risk of suicide.
Group discussions, simulations, handouts, and audiovisual materials provide the basis for skill development.
The workshop is designed to allow the presenter to respond to the needs of the group.
This workshop is only for individuals who have previously attended the 2-day ASIST within the last 3 years,
i.e. you must hold a valid ASIST certificate (confirmed by the Centre for Suicide Prevention in Calgary) to
register and you cannot take 2 Tune Ups in a row.
Topics include:
Risk estimation
Suicide Intervention tips (for example: engaging the person-at-risk and using intuition, etc.)
Reviewing the Suicide Intervention Model.

Suicide in Children
Suicidal behaviour in children 10 years and younger is a subject of growing concern for those who
work with children. Suicidal thoughts and attempts in children have sometimes been overlooked, denied,
or ignored.
This workshop provides information and offeres practical approaches for those working with children
who are 10 or younger and who may be at risk of suicide. Intervention approaches build on the skills
taught in the ASIST as it applies to children.

Workshop costs are subsidized by funding from the City of Grande Prairie Family and
Community Support Services, with additional support from Alberta Health Services, the
County of Grande Prairie No. 1 Family and Community Support Services, and Green View
Family and Community Support Services.
Youth Suicide Workshop
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth in Canada. Information and interventions
targeted specifically to youth age 12 24 are needed to respond to youth at risk and to increase the
prevention capability of adults working with youth.
Who should attend the Youth Suicide Workshop?
This one-day workshop is designed for any adult working with or engaging with youth. It is highly
recommended that participants have previous training in the A.S.I.S.T: Applied Suicide Intervention
Skills Training.
Workshop topics include:
Individual, environmental and situational risks
Youth protective factors
Influence of developmental stages
Warning signs for youth suicide behaviour
Practical intervention strategies
Postvention
Resources
The workshop uses diverse educational methods such as video-clips, narratives, discussion questions
and case scenarios creating an interactive, engaging 7-hour workshop.
All participants will receive a 60-page resource/workbook.
