Help a Friend/Getting Help

You don't have to be a professional to help a friend or family member find a safe way to deal with their problems. If you think there is something wrong, ask. One conversation can make all the difference. And you don't have to have all the answers yourself. If you're not sure what to do or say, you can call a help line for information. Check below for services.

Ask: Ask directly how they are doing. Ask about how bad things are, if anyone else knows, and if they've tried to get help. Ask if they are thinking about suicide and if they have a plan.

Listen: Listen to what they are saying about their feelings. Listen and find out where their pressures and pain are coming from. Don't jump in with advice right away. Listen without arguing. Find out what can be done to help relieve the pressure.

Get Help: Let them know there is help. Encourage them to talk to someone rather than struggle with their problems alone. Check about services. Get their agreement to taking a first step towards getting help. Help them make a call. If the person is at risk, don't leave them alone.
